The ELM Archives

The East London Mosque Archives hold significant collections documenting the history of one of the UK’s oldest mosques and the Muslim community in East London. The archives span the growth of the organisation from a fund to establish a mosque in London, to the first East London Mosque in East London, to the building of the purpose built Mosque and London Muslim Centre on Whitechapel Road.

The collections document the functions and activities of the Mosque and Centre, and include photographs, minutes, annual reports, correspondence, marriage records, conversion records, finance records, fundraising appeals, architectural and building records, and press cuttings. The collections also include records of the Indigent Moslems Burial Fund and the Jamiat-ul-Muslimin.

What is available?

Materials are made available at the discretion of the Archives' staff; some may be not be accessible to external researchers. Files which contain sensitive personal information about individuals may also be restricted.

Viewing the collections

Access to the East London Mosque Archive is by appointment. Please email [email protected] to make an appointment. All users are required to register with the service on their first visit; please bring a form of photo ID as well as a second ID providing proof of your permanent address.
